Thing 23!!!

Hooray! I'm finished! This has been an interesting experience. I have certainly learned much about Web 2.0, which is nice because I'm using many of these applications in my classes. This semester we are blogging and creating wikis in my Bibliography of the Sciences class.

There are some things I will probably never use again but others that I think I will keep up -- Bloglines with my RSS feeds, Library Thing, Google Docs.

Week 9 - Thing 22 Downloadable Books

Finally, an easy one! I've been using Overdrive, NetLibrary and Project Gutenberg for a while.

I still prefer to read the paper version than one on a computer screen. I downloaded a book about creating web pages for one of my classes and still ended up checking out the print version.

I'm slowly getting used to reading articles, etc. without printing them out but it's hard. I enjoy highlighting, which apparently you can also do on the computer to the electronic version.

Anyway, I have yet to download a book to my MP3 player. I would have to clear out some music to make room. Either that or get a player with more space.

Week 9 - Thing 21 Podcasts

I like that you can subscribe to Podcasts rather than having to continually search for them. Searching on Yahoo Podcasts, I see that NPR has one. I also found The OPLIN 4cast, although it looks like it's geared to Ohio libraries, there may still be some interesting info available.

Week 8 -Thing 19

I love Google Maps! It fascinates that I can search for a place and then zoom in to see what it looks like. We are traveling to Gray, Maine in September and I was able to find our friend's house, an inn nearby, and the roads to get there on the hybrid map.

Week 8 - Thing 18

I think I would use Google Docs, especially for school work. That way I can work on documents away from home without having to remember my flash drive or save and email things to myself when I don't have my laptop with me. Since I have a google account for this blog, it doesn't require yet another username and password.

Week 9 - Thing 20

Check out this very funny video on You Tube!

Week 7 - Things 16 and 17

My main experience with Wikis is Wikipedia, which I try to avoid if possible. The teens in my book club don't even use Wikipedia - too much wrong information they say. College students seem to be very fond of it though.
However, I like the fact that wikis allow collaborative work and that anyone can create a webpage without having knowledge of HTML or having to upload to a server.
On the flip side, anyone can create a webpage, adding to the already huge amounts of useless or wrong information that we constantly must wade through.

Here is a list of some of my favortite reads:

Week 6 - Thing 15

So I'm stuck on this third part - about the future of Library 2.0.
From the focus groups we conducted for the Customer Service Team, we heard that teens would like more online interactivity but we didn't hear much from adults about it, which was disappointing. Do patrons want us to do the work so the can just view what's there or would they like to be a part of the creation process? I think the future may fall somewhere in between.

Week 6 - Thing 13 & Thing 14

I certainty see the benefit of using del.icio.us to store bookmarks, especially if someone is using many different computers to access the Internet. I imported my bookmarks from my personal computer to my del.icio.us account. We'll see if I ever use it. I did find and save a few Elizabeth Peters sites I had not seen before.

For the library setting, it seems a little too loosey goosey - if anyone can edit and add tags it could get unruly. If it could be managed, it would be a useful research tool. Then again, many library websites have lists of other useful websites. Sometimes they are buried too deep within the site for patrons to find.

I am still not sure what I would ever do with Technorati. I searched for library blogs and found a few. They have some postings but these seem to be announcements that could just as easily be on their websites. It looks like the music page is just another marketing tool - with links to Amazon to purchase the music.

The whole idea of tagging seem so subjective but at the same time kind of cool. There are no rules!

Week 5 - Thing 10

I created an avatar. I could spend (waste) a lot of time playing with it.
Anyway here I am. It looks eerily like me when I'm wearing my glasses!

Week 5 - Thing 11

I love Library Thing. I discovered it during my spring class.
I cataloged my Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody books.

Week 5 - Thing 12

I can see how Rollyo could be a really useful tool. Here's mine: http://www.rollyo.com/rgoetz/

It's not very exciting. I hope to have more time to work on it later.

Week 4 - Thing 8 & Thing 9

I just set up my Bloglines account and found some "library related" feeds to receive. Is the Daily Show considered library related? I guess not. The Shifted Librarian, Readers Club, and Library Bytes sound interesting. If you don't already receive the comic strip Unshelved, I would recommend it.

Week 3 - Thing 7 (technologically speaking)

I just added some music to my MP3 player -- so cool!

On a completely different topic, apparently if my Clarion teacher logs on to Blackboard, she would be crossing the picket line. Who knew there could be virtual picket lines, too?

Week 3 - Thing 5 & Thing 6

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevenv/172616216/

A picture to remind me of vacation. A week is just not long enough.

So cool that you could make your own postage stamps in Flickr!

The Mashups are a neat idea, if they work. I had some trouble getting images to load in the Flickr Montagr or finding good ones to make a recognizable montage.

The Library Trading Cards are fun, too. I'll have to take a digital picture sometime so I can make one.

Week 1 and 2

I finally found a name and got this blog up and running.
I am looking forward to learning new things this summer.

Regarding the 7 1/2 habits - I think the hardest habit for me is viewing problems as challenges. My easiest habit is having confidence that I'm an effective learner.
